About Train Travel Japan
Hi, I’m Josh, the person behind Train Travel Japan.
I’m a Japanese native based in Canada who has travelled across all 47 prefectures of Japan over more than 30 years. Trains have always been one of my favourite ways to explore the country — from major Shinkansen routes to rural local lines, sightseeing trains, mountain railways, and ferry connections.
I created Train Travel Japan to help travellers understand Japan’s rail system and build better trips around it.
Japan’s rail network is incredibly convenient once you understand it, but it can feel complicated before your first trip. Questions about JR Passes, regional passes, seat reservations, luggage rules, private railways, and which station to use can quickly become overwhelming.
The goal of Train Travel Japan is simple: turn that complexity into practical, easy-to-follow information so you can spend less time worrying about transport and more time enjoying Japan.
