5 Spectacular Sightseeing Trains to Ride in Kyushu, Japan

Kyushu has one of the best collections of sightseeing trains in Japan. JR Kyushu calls many of them “Design & Story Trains,” with each service built around the scenery, culture, food and character of the region it travels through.

You can ride a classic resort train to Yufuin, follow two different coastal routes around western Kyushu, take a family-friendly train through the Aso region, travel beside Kagoshima Bay or spend most of a day aboard a premium train exploring Kyushu itself.

5 Spectacular Sightseeing Trains in Kyushu

Yufuin no Mori → TWO STARS 4047 → ASO BOY! → Ibusuki no Tamatebako → 36+3

These five trains offer very different experiences, from easy sightseeing journeys that fit naturally into a normal itinerary to premium rail experiences worth planning an entire day around.

Kyushu Sightseeing Trains at a Glance

Train Main Route Best For
Yufuin no Mori Hakata ↔ Yufuin / Beppu Classic Kyushu sightseeing-train experience
TWO STARS 4047 Takeo-Onsen ↔ Nagasaki Coastal scenery and western Kyushu
ASO BOY! Kumamoto ↔ Aso / Miyaji Families and the Aso region
Ibusuki no Tamatebako Kagoshima-Chuo ↔ Ibusuki Kagoshima Bay and southern Kyushu
36+3 Different route depending on the day Premium rail travel, food and regional experiences

Which One Should First-Time Visitors Choose?

Yufuin no Mori is the easiest recommendation for most first-time Kyushu visitors because it combines a memorable train with one of Kyushu’s most popular destinations.

Families should look closely at ASO BOY!, while travelers interested in a longer premium experience should consider 36+3.

Important 2026 Planning Notes

Yufuin no Mori Does Not Use the Same Formation Every Day

Yufuin no Mori operates several services between Hakata and Yufuin, with one current round trip continuing to Oita and Beppu.

However, the exact Yufuin no Mori trainset and number of services vary by operating date. On some dates, a regular Limited Express Yufu runs instead of certain Yufuin no Mori services.

TWO STARS 4047 Uses Two Different Routes

The morning train runs from Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki along the Ariake Sea side of western Kyushu.

The afternoon return takes a different route from Nagasaki to Takeo-Onsen via the Omura Bay, Huis Ten Bosch and Arita areas.

This means the two directions provide different scenery rather than simply repeating the same journey.

ASO BOY! and Ibusuki no Tamatebako Are Easier to Fit Into an Itinerary

ASO BOY! currently makes two round trips between Kumamoto and Miyaji on applicable operating dates, while Ibusuki no Tamatebako currently runs three round trips per day between Kagoshima-Chuo and Ibusuki.

Both still require reserved seats, so do not rely on simply boarding when you arrive at the station.

36+3 Is a Different Experience Each Day

36+3 currently operates across five different Kyushu routes from Thursday through Monday, with the route determined by the day of the week.

Some journeys include extended station stops and regional hospitality, so this train is better treated as a sightseeing experience than simply transportation between two cities.

Reserve Popular D&S Trains Early

Most featured trains in this guide use reserved seating and can sell out during weekends, holidays and busy travel periods.

If a particular train is important to your Kyushu itinerary, check the operating calendar first and reserve the train before finalizing that day’s sightseeing.

Operating patterns last checked: September 2026.

1. Yufuin no Mori — Kyushu’s Classic Resort Train

Yufuin no Mori is one of Japan’s best-known sightseeing trains and a perfect introduction to JR Kyushu’s Design & Story trains.

The distinctive green limited express connects Hakata with the hot-spring town of Yufuin, with selected services continuing through to Oita and Beppu.

Why Ride Yufuin no Mori?

  • Direct sightseeing train from Hakata to Yufuin
  • Distinctive elevated seating and large windows
  • Panoramic views from parts of the train
  • Salon and lounge-style spaces
  • Onboard buffet selling regional food, drinks and souvenirs
  • Box seating available on selected trainsets
  • Easy to combine with an overnight stay in Yufuin or Beppu

Our Pick for a First Kyushu Sightseeing Train

If you only have time for one sightseeing train during a first trip to Kyushu, Yufuin no Mori is an excellent choice because the train itself is memorable and Yufuin is already one of the region’s most popular destinations.

Inside Yufuin no Mori

Two Different Trainsets

Yufuin no Mori currently uses two different train formations. The four-car and five-car trains have slightly different interiors and facilities, so the exact experience depends on your departure.

JR Kyushu may also substitute a regular Limited Express Yufu on certain dates, so check the operating calendar if riding the actual Yufuin no Mori train is important to you.

Buffet and Regional Food

The onboard buffet sells regional sweets, drinks, local beer, souvenirs and other products from communities along the route.

Food and merchandise can sell out, so purchase anything that is a priority relatively early in the journey.

Box Seats for Small Groups

The five-car Yufuin no Mori formation includes box seating for groups of three or four passengers, with a large shared table.

These seats currently cost the same ordinary reserved-seat fare but are sold only through JR ticket offices rather than the normal online reservation system.

Yufuin no Mori Tickets and Reservations

Journey Current Adult Price
Hakata → Yufuin — Regular Ticket ¥6,130 one way
Hakata → Yufuin — Kyushu Net Ticket ¥5,600 one way

All Seats Are Reserved

Yufuin no Mori has no non-reserved seating. Obtain a seat reservation before boarding.

Reserved seats currently go on sale from 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before travel.

Using a JR Kyushu Rail Pass

Eligible JR Kyushu Rail Passes covering northern Kyushu can be used on Yufuin no Mori.

Once you have received your rail pass in Kyushu, eligible reserved-seat reservations can currently be made without an additional charge, subject to the reservation limits of your particular pass.

Want to Reserve Before Arriving in Japan?

JR Kyushu also offers an optional paid advance-reservation service for travelers who purchased an eligible JR Kyushu Rail Pass in advance.

The current advance reservation charge for a Design & Story train is ¥1,500 per section for an adult.

This fee is for reserving the seat before receiving the rail pass; it is different from obtaining an eligible reservation after arriving in Kyushu.

Fares and reservation rules last checked: September 2026.

2. TWO STARS 4047 — Two Coastal Journeys Around Western Kyushu

TWO STARS 4047 is one of JR Kyushu’s most interesting newer sightseeing trains, linking Takeo-Onsen and Nagasaki by two completely different routes.

The morning journey follows the Ariake Sea side of western Kyushu, while the afternoon train returns via Omura Bay, Huis Ten Bosch and Arita.

Why Ride TWO STARS 4047?

  • Different scenery in each direction
  • Ariake Sea views on the morning route
  • Omura Bay views on the afternoon route
  • Large shared lounge car
  • Regional food, drinks and souvenirs onboard
  • Long sightseeing stops at selected stations
  • Easy to combine with Nagasaki and the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen

Don’t Think of This as a Simple Round Trip

The morning and afternoon trains follow different railway lines, so riding both directions gives you two distinct sightseeing experiences.

TWO STARS 4047 Morning and Afternoon Routes

Morning — Ariake Sea Route

The morning service travels from Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki via the Nagasaki Main Line.

Highlights include views across the Ariake Sea and sightseeing stops in communities such as Hizen-Hama, Tara and Konagai.

Afternoon — Omura Bay Route

The afternoon service travels from Nagasaki to Takeo-Onsen using the Omura Line.

The route includes the beautiful Omura Bay and stops around Shin-Omura, Chiwata, Huis Ten Bosch and Arita before arriving at Takeo-Onsen.

Excellent with the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen

Takeo-Onsen is also the western terminus of the connecting Relay Kamome route from Hakata and the starting point of the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen toward Nagasaki.

This makes it easy to use TWO STARS 4047 in one direction and the Shinkansen in the other.

Inside TWO STARS 4047

Lounge 40

The entire middle car is a shared lounge called Lounge 40.

It includes sofa seating, window-facing counters and a sales counter, allowing passengers to leave their assigned seat temporarily and enjoy a more relaxed sightseeing-train atmosphere.

Regional Food and Drinks

The onboard counter sells regional sweets, drinks, Saga and Nagasaki sake, original merchandise and other products from communities along the route.

Some special bento meals are available only on certain routes and currently require advance reservation.

Local Experiences Along the Way

The train includes longer station stops and regional hospitality on selected journeys rather than simply passing through each station.

Examples can include local products, scenic viewpoints and small experiences designed to introduce passengers to western Kyushu.

TWO STARS 4047 Tickets and Reservations

Journey Current Regular Adult Fare
Takeo-Onsen → Nagasaki — Morning ¥4,960
Nagasaki → Takeo-Onsen — Afternoon ¥5,250

All Seats Are Reserved

TWO STARS 4047 is a fully reserved three-car train, so purchase or reserve your seat before boarding.

The train currently operates mainly on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and public holidays, but always check the official calendar for your date.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass

Eligible JR Kyushu Rail Passes covering the route can be used on TWO STARS 4047.

As with Yufuin no Mori, eligible reservations obtained after receiving your rail pass in Kyushu can be made according to the reservation rules of your particular pass.

Advance Reservations

Travelers who purchase an eligible JR Kyushu Rail Pass before arriving can also use JR Kyushu’s optional paid online service to reserve certain sightseeing-train seats in advance.

The current advance reservation fee for a Design & Story train is ¥1,500 per adult per section.

TWO STARS 4047 fares, routes and reservation information last checked: September 2026.

3. ASO BOY! — Best Kyushu Sightseeing Train for Families

ASO BOY! is one of Japan’s most family-friendly sightseeing trains, traveling from Kumamoto through the dramatic landscapes of central Kyushu toward Aso and Miyaji.

The four-car train is filled with JR Kyushu’s playful Kuro character and includes special family seating, children’s spaces and panoramic seats designed to make the journey entertaining as well as scenic.

Why Ride ASO BOY!?

  • Excellent choice for families with children
  • Direct sightseeing train from Kumamoto to Aso and Miyaji
  • Panoramic seats at the ends of the train
  • Special parent-and-child seating
  • Dedicated children’s play spaces
  • Onboard food, drinks and souvenirs
  • Mountain scenery through the Aso region

Our Family Pick in Kyushu

If you are traveling around Kyushu with younger children, ASO BOY! is probably the strongest sightseeing train to prioritize.

The train itself becomes an attraction rather than simply transportation to the Aso region.

Inside ASO BOY!

White Kuro Parent-and-Child Seats

Car 3 has special wide seats designed for one adult and one young child. The layout keeps the child’s seat beside the window regardless of the direction of travel.

Under the current rules, one adult and one child under age 6 can use this seat with one adult reserved-seat charge.

Kuro Club Children’s Area

Car 3 also contains dedicated spaces for younger passengers, including children’s books, play areas and a baby-friendly space.

Children use these areas with a parent or guardian accompanying them.

Panorama Seats

Cars 1 and 4 feature panoramic seats positioned below the elevated driver’s cab, providing an unusually open view along the railway ahead.

These seats are limited and can be popular even with adults traveling without children.

Box Seats

Car 2 includes box seating for groups of three or four with a large shared table.

JR Kyushu currently sells these at the normal ordinary reserved-seat price, but box seats are available through station ticket offices rather than the usual online booking process.

ASO BOY! Tickets and Reservations

Journey Current Regular Adult Fare
Kumamoto → Aso ¥3,080 one way

All Seats Are Reserved

ASO BOY! has no ordinary non-reserved seating. Reserve your seat before boarding.

Reserved seats currently go on sale from 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before travel.

Current Schedule

On normal operating dates, ASO BOY! currently makes two round trips between Kumamoto and Miyaji, stopping at stations including Shin-Suizenji, Higo-Ozu, Tateno and Aso.

The train does not operate every day, and on some dates JR Kyushu uses the Kawasemi Yamasemi trainset instead, so check the current calendar before booking.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass

Eligible JR Kyushu Rail Passes covering the route can be used on ASO BOY!, subject to the reserved-seat rules of the particular pass.

ASO BOY! fares, facilities and timetable information last checked: September 2026.

4. Ibusuki no Tamatebako — Kagoshima Bay & Japanese Folklore

Ibusuki no Tamatebako is one of JR Kyushu’s most visually distinctive trains, linking Kagoshima-Chuo with the hot-spring resort of Ibusuki.

The train is inspired by the Japanese legend of Urashima Taro and the mysterious tamatebako treasure box. Its seaside exterior is white while the mountain side is black, reflecting the story of Urashima Taro’s hair turning white when he opened the box.

Why Ride Ibusuki no Tamatebako?

  • Beautiful views across Kinko Bay
  • Views toward Sakurajima when conditions are clear
  • Distinctive black-and-white exterior
  • Ocean-facing counter seats
  • Wood-rich interior using teak and southern Kyushu cedar
  • Easy one-hour journey from Kagoshima
  • Perfect combination with an Ibusuki hot-spring stay

A Train Based on the Urashima Taro Legend

When the train doors open, a mist effect recalls the white smoke that emerged from the legendary tamatebako.

It is a small detail, but it illustrates how JR Kyushu builds a story around the entire train rather than simply decorating the passenger cars.

Inside Ibusuki no Tamatebako

Ocean-Facing Counter Seats

One of the train’s signature features is seating arranged toward the windows overlooking Kinko Bay.

These seats are especially attractive if enjoying the coastal scenery is the main reason for your journey.

Box Seats

Car 1 includes box seating for groups of three or four with a large table.

These currently cost the same as ordinary reserved seating and can work particularly well for families or small groups.

Family-Friendly Spaces

Car 2 includes children’s chairs and a baby area beside the windows, together with additional sofa-style spaces.

Although ASO BOY! is the more strongly family-focused train, Ibusuki no Tamatebako is still a comfortable choice for families traveling around southern Kyushu.

Check the Train Formation

The regular train is normally formed of two cars, but a third reserve car is added on selected dates.

The reserve car has a different interior and does not include the same ocean-facing counter seats, so check the current formation calendar if a particular seat type matters to you.

Ibusuki no Tamatebako Tickets and Reservations

Journey Current Regular Adult Fare
Kagoshima-Chuo → Ibusuki ¥2,950 one way

All Seats Are Reserved

Ibusuki no Tamatebako is an all-reserved limited express, so obtain a seat reservation before boarding.

Three Round Trips

The current timetable provides three round trips between Kagoshima-Chuo and Ibusuki on operating days, with a journey time of roughly 50 minutes.

That makes this one of the easiest sightseeing trains in Kyushu to fit into a normal sightseeing day.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass

The All Kyushu Rail Pass and Southern Kyushu Rail Pass can cover the journey when used within their applicable conditions.

Obtain the required reserved seat before boarding.

Consider Staying Overnight in Ibusuki

The train works as a day trip from Kagoshima, but Ibusuki is famous for its hot springs and sand baths.

An overnight stay lets you enjoy the destination rather than treating the train simply as an out-and-back ride.

Ibusuki no Tamatebako fares, timetable and train information last checked: September 2026.

5. 36+3 — Premium Sightseeing Train Around Kyushu

36+3 is one of JR Kyushu’s most ambitious sightseeing trains, traveling around different parts of the island on five route patterns from Thursday through Monday.

Rather than focusing on one destination, the train is designed around the journey itself, combining Green Car seating, private compartments, regional food, onboard experiences and longer stops where local communities welcome passengers.

Why Ride 36+3?

  • Five different routes around Kyushu
  • Green Car accommodation throughout
  • Private compartments on meal packages
  • Shared lounge and onboard bar counter
  • Regional food, drinks and souvenirs
  • Long sightseeing and hospitality stops
  • A good choice for travelers who want the train itself to be the attraction

What Does “36+3” Mean?

JR Kyushu describes Kyushu as the world’s 36th-largest island, with the “+3” representing the surprise, impression and happiness it hopes passengers experience during the journey.

36+3 Routes by Day of the Week

Day Main Route Highlights
Thursday Hakata → Kagoshima-Chuo Kumamoto, Hisatsu Orange Railway and East China Sea scenery
Friday Kagoshima-Chuo → Miyazaki Kirishima region and local hospitality stops
Saturday Miyazaki Airport / Miyazaki → Oita / Beppu Hyuga coast, Nobeoka and mountain railway scenery
Sunday Oita / Beppu → Kokura / Hakata Beppu Bay, northern Kyushu and a long Mojiko stop
Monday Hakata ↔ Sasebo Saga, Hizen-Hama, Arita and western Kyushu

Choose the Route, Not Just the Train

The 36+3 experience changes significantly depending on the operating day. Choose the route that fits your Kyushu itinerary rather than selecting a date simply because the train is running.

The Thursday through Sunday services work particularly well as part of a one-way journey around Kyushu, while Monday currently offers travel between Hakata and Sasebo.

36+3 Seating, Meals and Reservations

Car 5 — Green Car Seats

Car 5 contains conventional Green Car seating and is the simplest way to ride 36+3 without purchasing a complete meal package.

Travelers using an eligible JR Kyushu Rail Pass are currently limited to this car when booking the train through the rail-pass system.

Private Compartments

Cars 1, 2, 3 and 6 contain private Green Car compartments for couples, families and small groups.

These compartments are currently sold as travel products that include a meal rather than as ordinary rail-pass seats.

Car 4 Lounge

Car 4 is a shared lounge available during the journey and is also used for onboard activities and events.

Car 3 also contains a bar counter selling drinks, snacks and original goods.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass Does Not Cover Everything

This train works differently from Yufuin no Mori or ASO BOY!.

If you ride 36+3 with a JR Kyushu Rail Pass, the pass currently covers only the applicable basic JR fare. You must separately pay the limited express and Green Car charges.

Private-compartment lunch plans cannot currently be used with the JR Kyushu Rail Pass.

Reservations

All seats are reserved. Tickets currently go on sale from 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before travel.

Rail-pass users can make eligible Car 5 reservations through the JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking service or at a station ticket office.

Thursday Route Has an Extra Private-Railway Charge

Part of the Thursday Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo route uses the Hisatsu Orange Railway.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass users currently need to pay the separate Hisatsu Orange Railway charge in addition to the 36+3 supplements.

36+3 routes, seating and reservation rules last checked: September 2026.

September 2026: Temporary 36+3 Service Suspensions

Due to the effects of the July 28, 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, JR Kyushu has temporarily suspended selected 36+3 services during September.

Current suspension dates are: September 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25, 2026.

Travelers visiting during September should check JR Kyushu’s latest operating information before departure.

If you want the train itself to be a major part of the day, consider 36+3.

Can You Use a JR Kyushu Rail Pass on These Trains?

How to Book Kyushu Sightseeing Trains

Check the Operating Calendar First

Not every Design & Story train operates every day. Before choosing accommodation or planning a day around a particular train, confirm that it runs on your travel date.

Start Checking One Month Before Travel

Reserved-seat tickets for many JR Kyushu trains go on sale from 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before departure.

Popular trains such as Yufuin no Mori can sell out during weekends, holidays and busy travel seasons.

Rail-Pass Users Have Two Reservation Options

If you wait until arriving in Kyushu and receive your rail pass, you can make eligible ordinary reserved-seat reservations according to the rules of your pass.

Travelers who purchase an eligible pass in advance can also use JR Kyushu’s paid advance-reservation service before arriving in Japan.

Advance D&S Reservations Cost Extra

JR Kyushu currently charges ¥1,500 per adult per section for advance reservations on eligible Design & Story trains through the JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking service.

This optional fee allows you to secure a seat before receiving the physical rail pass in Kyushu.

Special Seats May Require a Ticket Office

Box seats, private compartments and other special seating arrangements are not always available through normal online reservation channels.

Check the individual train if a particular seating configuration is important to you.

Reserve the Train Before Building the Day

If a sightseeing train is one of the highlights of your Kyushu trip, secure that train first and arrange the surrounding sightseeing once your seat is confirmed.

Yufuin no Mori is our overall recommendation for first-time visitors because it combines a memorable train journey with the popular hot-spring destination of Yufuin.

ASO BOY! is the strongest family choice, with parent-and-child seating, children’s spaces, playful Kuro character decorations and panoramic seats.

Ibusuki no Tamatebako is another excellent choice for views across Kagoshima’s Kinko Bay.

Yes. Many JR Kyushu Design & Story trains are covered when the journey falls within the valid area of your pass.
