Mistake #1: Treating Suica Like a Rail Pass
Suica is primarily a stored-value payment method, not an unlimited transportation pass.
When you tap into a normal railway or subway journey, the appropriate fare is deducted from your balance.
Easy way to remember it: JR Pass = prepaid travel coverage on eligible JR services. Suica = electronic money used to pay individual fares and purchases.
Mistake #2: Accidentally Paying for a JR Pass Journey with Suica
If you have an active JR Pass, do not automatically tap Welcome Suica Mobile for every JR journey.
If the journey is already covered by your JR Pass, use the JR Pass instead.
JR Pass users: Suica is most useful for the transport your pass does not cover, such as many subways, private railways and buses.
Mistake #3: Assuming “Works Nationwide” Means Unlimited Long-Distance Travel
Welcome Suica Mobile can be used in many compatible IC-card areas around Japan, but this does not mean you can start an ordinary stored-value journey in one region and simply tap out in another distant IC-card region.
Long-distance journeys that cross separate IC-card areas may require a regular train ticket.
Example: Do not try to travel from the Tokyo area to the Osaka area on conventional trains simply by tapping Suica at both ends.
Mistake #4: Assuming Suica Automatically Covers Limited Express or Shinkansen Travel
Having enough money on your Suica balance does not automatically give you the additional ticket or seat reservation required for every premium train.
Limited Express and Shinkansen services may require a separate ticket, an e-ticket reservation or another supported ticketing arrangement.
Before boarding: Check whether your journey requires only a basic fare or also a Limited Express, Shinkansen or reserved-seat ticket.
Mistake #5: Using Different Devices at Entry and Exit
If your Suica is on your iPhone, tap your iPhone when entering and exiting.
If it is on your Apple Watch, use the watch for both.
Switching between devices during the same journey can leave an incomplete travel record that may require help from station staff.
Mistake #6: Forgetting to Check Your Balance
It is easy to become accustomed to tapping through gates without thinking about the fare.
Check your balance occasionally, particularly before a longer local journey or when traveling somewhere with fewer convenient top-up options.
Practical tip: Keep enough balance for your next few local journeys, but avoid loading the maximum amount unless you genuinely expect to spend it.
Mistake #7: Issuing Welcome Suica Too Early
The 180-day validity period begins when the Welcome Suica is issued.
If your trip is still several months away, there is usually no benefit in starting that countdown unnecessarily early.
Mistake #8: Expecting a Refund at the End of the Trip
Welcome Suica Mobile does not provide a refund of the remaining stored-value balance.
Toward the end of your trip, gradually reduce your balance by using Suica for local transport and eligible everyday purchases.
Last-day strategy: A small remaining balance is easy to spend at a convenience store, station shop or vending machine. Avoid topping up a large amount immediately before departure.
Mistake #9: Assuming Every Bus or Railway Accepts Suica
Suica is widely accepted, but not every railway, bus or rural transport service participates in the interoperable IC-card system.
Look for the compatible transportation IC-card mark or check the operator before relying on Suica as your only payment method.
Good travel habit: Keep access to some Japanese yen even if you use Welcome Suica Mobile extensively. Cash is still useful for smaller rural transport services and businesses that do not accept IC-card payments.

What is Welcome Suica Mobile?
Welcome Suica Mobile is JR East’s digital Suica service for international visitors using compatible Apple devices.
It can be used to pay for participating trains, subways, buses, shops, vending machines and other services that accept compatible transportation IC cards.
How long is Welcome Suica Mobile valid?
Welcome Suica Mobile is valid for 180 days from the date it is issued.
The validity period begins when you issue the Suica, not when you first use it in Japan.
Can I get a refund of my remaining balance?
No.
Any unused stored-value balance cannot be refunded, so it is a good idea to reduce your balance toward the end of your trip.
Can I set up Welcome Suica Mobile before arriving in Japan?
You can download the app before your trip, but whether you can issue and top up the Suica before arrival depends on your current country or region.
If pre-arrival issuance is not available where you live, complete the setup after entering Japan with Location Services enabled.
Does Welcome Suica Mobile work on Android?
The current Welcome Suica Mobile service is for compatible Apple devices.
Travelers using Android should check JR East’s latest information before their trip, as supported devices and services may change.
Can I use Welcome Suica Mobile on Apple Watch?
Yes, on a compatible Apple Watch.
A single Suica is stored on either the iPhone or Apple Watch at one time, so use the device that currently holds the Suica when entering and exiting railway gates.
Can I use Welcome Suica Mobile throughout Japan?
It can be used across many participating transportation IC-card networks throughout Japan.
However, this does not mean every railway or bus accepts Suica, and ordinary stored-value travel generally cannot simply cross between separate IC-card regions.
Can I use Welcome Suica Mobile from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka?
Not simply by tapping in and out using ordinary Suica stored value.
For long-distance Shinkansen travel such as Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, use the appropriate Shinkansen ticketing method or an eligible JR Pass.
Can I use Welcome Suica Mobile on the Shinkansen?
Yes, in certain situations.
Eligible JR East journeys may use services such as Touch de Go! Shinkansen or a supported Shinkansen e-ticket linked to your Welcome Suica Mobile.
This does not mean an ordinary Suica balance automatically works on every Shinkansen in Japan.
Can I top up Welcome Suica Mobile with a foreign credit card?
You can top up using an eligible card registered with Apple Pay.
Acceptance depends on the card and issuer, so an overseas credit card is not guaranteed to work. Cash top-up options are also available at supported locations in Japan.
How much money can I keep on Welcome Suica Mobile?
The maximum stored-value balance is currently ¥20,000.
For most visitors, keeping a smaller balance and topping up as needed is more practical because unused balance cannot be refunded.
Do I need Welcome Suica Mobile if I have a JR Pass?

Is Welcome Suica Mobile a better choice than a physical Welcome Suica?
For compatible iPhone users, the mobile version is often more convenient because there is no physical card to obtain and its validity period is much longer.
A physical card may still be preferable for travelers who do not have a compatible device or simply prefer using a separate card.
