This 7-day Japan train itinerary takes you from Tokyo to Fukuoka by Shinkansen, stopping at some of Japan’s most popular destinations along the way.
The route combines Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka, making it a good option for travelers who want to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short trip.
7-Day Route at a Glance
Tokyo → Kyoto → Nara → Osaka → Hiroshima → Fukuoka
This is a fairly fast-paced itinerary. If you prefer slower travel, consider adding extra nights in Kyoto, Hiroshima or Fukuoka.

Is a JR Pass Worth It for This 7-Day Itinerary?
This itinerary includes several long-distance Shinkansen journeys, but at current Japan Rail Pass prices, the nationwide 7-Day JR Pass is generally not the best-value option for this route alone.
Major Rail Journeys on This Route
- Tokyo → Kyoto
- Kyoto → Nara → Osaka
- Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima
- Hiroshima → Miyajima
- Hiroshima → Fukuoka
Individual Tickets Are Usually Cheaper
Current standard reserved-seat fares for the three major Shinkansen journeys total roughly ¥33,000:
- Tokyo → Kyoto: around ¥13,850 on HIKARI
- Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima: around ¥10,420 on SAKURA
- Hiroshima → Hakata: around ¥8,900 on SAKURA
Adding the shorter JR journeys around Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima and Miyajima will normally still leave the total below the current 7-Day Japan Rail Pass price.
Current 7-Day Japan Rail Pass Price
The 7-Day Ordinary Japan Rail Pass currently costs ¥50,000 through the official online service.
For exchange orders purchased through overseas JR-designated sales agents from October 1, 2026, the adult price increases to ¥53,000.
When Could the JR Pass Still Make Sense?
A nationwide pass may become more attractive if you add substantial extra JR travel, such as additional long-distance day trips or a return journey toward Tokyo.
For the seven-day one-way Tokyo-to-Fukuoka itinerary shown here, however, individual tickets are usually the first option I would compare.
Day 1: Tokyo
Start your trip in Tokyo and use your first day to settle in, recover from the flight and explore one or two neighborhoods rather than trying to cover too much.
Suggested Areas to Explore
- Asakusa and Senso-ji
- Ueno and Ameyoko
- Shibuya and Harajuku
- Shinjuku in the evening
Train Travel Tip
For local travel in Tokyo, an IC card such as Suica or PASMO is usually the easiest option. You do not need to activate a JR Pass simply to get around Tokyo on your first day.
Overnight: Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen
Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto on the Tokaido Shinkansen. This is one of Japan’s busiest and most convenient intercity rail routes.
Suggested Plan
- Depart Tokyo in the morning
- Travel to Kyoto by Shinkansen
- Check in or leave your luggage at your hotel
- Spend the afternoon exploring central or eastern Kyoto
Which Shinkansen Should You Take?
For travelers buying individual tickets, the NOZOMI is normally the fastest and most frequent option between Tokyo and Kyoto.
If you are using a nationwide Japan Rail Pass and do not want to pay an additional charge, use an eligible HIKARI service.
Japan Rail Pass holders can also ride NOZOMI by purchasing the separate special NOZOMI/MIZUHO ticket available specifically to pass holders.
For a complete breakdown of Nozomi vs Hikari, ticket prices, JR Pass use and practical travel tips, see our Tokyo to Kyoto by train guide.
If you arrive early enough, good first-day options in Kyoto include Gion, Kiyomizu-dera, Nishiki Market or an evening walk around the Higashiyama area.
Overnight: Kyoto
Day 3: Kyoto
Spend a full day exploring Kyoto. Rather than trying to visit every famous sight, it is usually better to focus on one or two areas and allow time for walking, local transport and breaks.
Suggested Kyoto Highlights
- Fushimi Inari Taisha
- Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama
- Gion
- Arashiyama
- Kinkaku-ji
Don’t Overpack the Day
Kyoto’s attractions are spread across the city, and travel between them can take longer than expected. Choose a few priorities rather than trying to visit both eastern and western Kyoto in one rushed day.
Overnight: Kyoto
Day 4: Kyoto to Nara to Osaka
Check out of your Kyoto hotel in the morning and travel to Nara for a half-day visit before continuing to Osaka.
Suggested Nara Stops
- Nara Park
- Todai-ji
- Kasuga Taisha
- Naramachi, if time allows
If you are traveling with luggage, consider using station lockers or a luggage forwarding service so you do not have to carry large bags around Nara.
Continue to Osaka
Travel from Nara to Osaka in the afternoon or early evening. After checking in, spend the evening around Dotonbori, Namba or another central Osaka neighborhood.
Overnight: Osaka
Day 5: Osaka to Hiroshima
Leave Osaka in the morning and travel west to Hiroshima by Shinkansen. After arriving, check in or leave your luggage at the hotel, then spend the afternoon exploring central Hiroshima.
Suggested Hiroshima Highlights
- Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park
- Atomic Bomb Dome
- Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
- Hondori shopping area
- Okonomimura for Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki
Train Travel Tip
Osaka to Hiroshima is a straightforward Shinkansen journey, making this one of the easier long-distance travel days on the itinerary. Leaving Osaka reasonably early gives you plenty of time to explore Hiroshima after arrival.
Overnight: Hiroshima
Day 6: Hiroshima and Miyajima
Use your second day in Hiroshima for a trip to Miyajima, one of the most famous destinations in western Japan.
Suggested Miyajima Highlights
- Itsukushima Shrine
- The iconic offshore torii gate
- Omotesando shopping street
- Daisho-in Temple
- Mount Misen, if you have enough time
From central Hiroshima, travel toward Miyajimaguchi and take the ferry across to Miyajima. Allow several hours on the island so you do not have to rush between the main sights.
Miyajima Ferry and Visitor Tax
Travel from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi by JR train, then take the JR West Miyajima Ferry to the island.
If you are using a nationwide Japan Rail Pass, eligible JR train travel and the JR West Miyajima Ferry are covered.
However, the separate ¥100 Miyajima Visitor Tax is not included and must still be paid when visiting the island.
Return to Hiroshima in the afternoon or evening and enjoy your final night in the city.
Overnight: Hiroshima
Day 7: Hiroshima to Fukuoka
Finish the itinerary by traveling from Hiroshima to Fukuoka by Shinkansen. Fukuoka is a great final stop, with excellent food, compact sightseeing areas and convenient access to the rest of Kyushu.
Suggested Fukuoka Highlights
- Hakata Station area
- Canal City Hakata
- Tenjin
- Ohori Park
- Yatai food stalls in the evening
Train Travel Tip
Hiroshima to Hakata is a relatively short Shinkansen journey compared with some of the earlier legs of this itinerary, so you can arrive in Fukuoka with plenty of time left for sightseeing.
If Fukuoka is your final destination, you can continue your trip in Kyushu, fly home from Fukuoka Airport or connect onward to another part of Japan.
Overnight: Fukuoka
Where to Stay on This 7-Day Itinerary
For a fast-paced rail itinerary like this, staying close to major train stations can save a surprising amount of time and make luggage transfers much easier.
| City | Convenient Area | Why Stay There? |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo | Tokyo Station or Shinagawa | Convenient for the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto. |
| Kyoto | Kyoto Station | Easy access to Shinkansen, JR trains, buses and luggage services. |
| Osaka | Shin-Osaka, Umeda or Namba | Choose Shin-Osaka for rail convenience or central Osaka for restaurants and nightlife. |
| Hiroshima | Hiroshima Station | Convenient for the Shinkansen and the trip toward Miyajima. |
| Fukuoka | Hakata Station | Best for Shinkansen connections, airport access and onward travel. |
Final Tips for This Tokyo to Fukuoka Itinerary
- Travel light if possible. Changing hotels frequently is much easier with a smaller suitcase.
- Consider using luggage forwarding between major stops if you are traveling with large bags.
- Reserve Shinkansen seats in advance during busy travel periods.
- Use an IC card for local transportation that is not covered by your rail pass or long-distance ticket.
- Avoid adding too many extra destinations. This is already a relatively fast-paced seven-day route.
- Compare JR Pass, regional pass and individual-ticket costs before deciding which rail option to buy.
Want a Slower Trip?
If you have 10 to 14 days, consider adding extra nights in Tokyo, Kyoto or Hiroshima rather than adding more cities. The same route becomes much more relaxed with a few additional days.
Before You Buy a JR Pass
Compare the cost of your planned train journeys with the current JR Pass price. Depending on your route, individual tickets or a regional pass may offer better value.
