Who Can Use the Pass?
The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is intended for eligible international visitors. You must hold a passport issued by a country other than Japan and enter Japan with Temporary Visitor status.
You will need to present your passport when receiving the pass, and JR staff may ask to see it while you are traveling.
What Does the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass Cover?
The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass covers a large part of western Japan, allowing you to combine sightseeing around Osaka and Kyoto with longer journeys toward Himeji, Okayama, Hiroshima and Miyajima.
The pass includes:
- Sanyo Shinkansen: Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima
- Limited Express trains: Covered services within the valid area
- JR Special Rapid, Rapid and Local trains: Within the valid area
- JR West Miyajima Ferry: Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima
- West Japan JR Bus local routes: Within the valid pass area
This makes the pass useful not only for the major Kansai-to-Hiroshima journey but also for intermediate destinations such as Himeji and Okayama.
Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass Shinkansen Coverage
The pass covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima.
This means you can use the Shinkansen for journeys such as:
- Shin-Osaka → Himeji
- Shin-Osaka → Okayama
- Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima
- Himeji → Hiroshima
- Okayama → Hiroshima
If you are starting in Kyoto, use a covered conventional JR train from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka, then transfer to the Sanyo Shinkansen for Himeji, Okayama or Hiroshima.
The pass also does not cover the Sanyo Shinkansen west of Hiroshima toward Hakata, or the Kyushu Shinkansen.
This distinction is important because the pass covers Kyoto itself, but that does not mean every JR train operating from Kyoto is included.
Does the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass Cover Miyajima?
Yes. One of the useful features of the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is that it includes the JR West Miyajima Ferry between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima.
A convenient covered route from Hiroshima is:
- Take a JR train from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station.
- Walk to the ferry terminal.
- Take the JR West Miyajima Ferry across to Miyajima.
The train and JR West ferry portions are covered by the pass within the valid area.
This makes Hiroshima and Miyajima particularly easy to combine, either as a long day trip or, preferably, with at least one night in the Hiroshima area.
Major Destinations You Can Visit With the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass
The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is particularly useful for travelers following the classic route west from Osaka or Kyoto toward Hiroshima.
| Destination | Why Visit | Useful Rail Connection |
|---|---|---|

| Kyoto | Temples, shrines and historic districts | JR conventional trains |
| Kobe | Harbor city, food and easy Kansai day trip | JR Special Rapid trains |
| Himeji | Himeji Castle | Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka |
| Okayama | Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle | Sanyo Shinkansen |
| Kurashiki | Historic Bikan Quarter | JR local train from Okayama |
| Hiroshima | Peace Memorial Park and western Japan sightseeing base | Sanyo Shinkansen |
| Miyajima | Itsukushima Shrine and island scenery | JR train plus JR West Miyajima Ferry |
What Is Not Covered by the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass?
The pass covers a large part of western Japan, but there are several important limitations.
- Tokaido Shinkansen: The Shinkansen between Kyoto, Shin-Osaka and Tokyo is not covered.
- Sanyo Shinkansen west of Hiroshima: Travel from Hiroshima toward Hakata is not covered.
- Kyushu Shinkansen: Not covered.
- Green Car: Additional tickets are required for Green Car travel.
- Paid seating such as A-Seat: Separate charges apply.
- Most private railways, subways and city transportation: These are generally not included unless specifically stated in the pass conditions.
- Non-JR ferries to Miyajima: Only the JR West Miyajima Ferry is included.
If you plan to continue from Hiroshima toward Fukuoka or farther into Kyushu, you will need separate tickets or a pass with wider western Japan coverage.
Kansai-Hiroshima vs Kansai WIDE Area Pass
Both passes are valid for five consecutive days, but they are designed for different types of itineraries.
| Feature | Kansai-Hiroshima | Kansai WIDE |
|---|---|---|
| Adult Price | ¥17,000 | ¥12,000 |
| Validity | 5 consecutive days | 5 consecutive days |
| Sanyo Shinkansen | Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima | Shin-Osaka–Okayama |
| Hiroshima | Covered | Not covered |
| JR West Miyajima Ferry | Included | Not included |
| Best Fit | Hiroshima and Miyajima itineraries | Okayama and wider regional trips such as Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Takamatsu and Shirahama |
The key question is whether Hiroshima and Miyajima are part of your itinerary.
If they are, the extra ¥5,000 for the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass gives you Shinkansen coverage all the way to Hiroshima plus the JR West Miyajima Ferry.
If Okayama is as far west as you intend to travel and your itinerary instead includes destinations such as Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Takamatsu or Shirahama, the cheaper Kansai WIDE Area Pass may fit your trip better.
For a detailed comparison of the cheaper option, see our complete Kansai WIDE Area Pass guide.
Is the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass Worth It?
The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass can be excellent value if Hiroshima is a major part of your itinerary.
At ¥17,000 for five consecutive days, the pass is particularly attractive for travelers making a round trip between Kansai and Hiroshima, because regular Shinkansen fares on that route are relatively expensive.
The Pass Is Usually Worth Considering If You:
- Travel round-trip between Osaka or Kyoto and Hiroshima.
- Visit Hiroshima and Miyajima during the same five-day period.
- Stop at Himeji or Okayama while traveling west.
- Use several additional JR trains within Kansai during the pass period.
- Can group your most expensive western Japan journeys into five consecutive days.
The Pass May Not Be Worth It If You:
- Do not plan to travel as far as Hiroshima.
- Only travel one way from Kansai to Hiroshima and continue west afterward.
- Spend most of your trip around Osaka and Kyoto.
- Spread your expensive train journeys across more than five days.
How Quickly Can the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass Pay Off?
A simple Osaka–Hiroshima round trip shows why this pass can provide strong value.
| Journey | Approximate Individual Fare |
|---|---|
| Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima by Shinkansen | About ¥10,000–¥11,000 one way |
| Hiroshima → Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen | About ¥10,000–¥11,000 one way |
| Approximate Round Trip | About ¥20,000–¥22,000 |
The 5-day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs ¥17,000, so a simple round trip between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima can already cost more than the pass.
Any additional covered travel to Himeji, Okayama, Miyajimaguchi, Kansai Airport or elsewhere within the valid area can increase the potential savings further.
Sample 5-Day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass Itinerary
You do not need to spend all five days racing between cities. A practical itinerary can combine longer Shinkansen journeys with slower sightseeing days.
| Day | Suggested Journey |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Osaka → Himeji → Hiroshima |
| Day 2 | Hiroshima sightseeing |
| Day 3 | Hiroshima → Miyajima → Hiroshima |
| Day 4 | Hiroshima → Okayama → Kurashiki; stay in Okayama or continue to Osaka |
| Day 5 | Return to Osaka/Kyoto or use the pass for additional Kansai travel |
This itinerary makes good use of the pass without requiring a long-distance day trip every day. Himeji can be visited en route to Hiroshima, while Okayama and Kurashiki fit naturally into the return journey toward Kansai.

Final Thoughts: Should You Buy the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass?
The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is one of the strongest-value JR West passes for travelers combining Osaka or Kyoto with Hiroshima and Miyajima.
At ¥17,000 for five consecutive days, it can pay for itself quickly if you make a round trip between Kansai and Hiroshima, especially when you also visit destinations such as Himeji, Okayama or Miyajima.
The pass is less useful if Hiroshima is not part of your itinerary. In that case, the cheaper Kansai WIDE Area Pass may provide better coverage for the journeys you actually plan to make.
The key is to plan your route first and concentrate the most expensive JR journeys within the five-day validity period.
Before You Buy a JR Pass
Compare the cost of your planned train journeys with the current JR Pass price. Depending on your route, individual tickets or a regional pass may offer better value.
