Traveling from Osaka to Hiroshima by train is fast and straightforward thanks to the Sanyo Shinkansen.

Mizuho: Just as Fast

Mizuho operates between Shin-Osaka and destinations on the Kyushu Shinkansen and also stops at Hiroshima.

Travel times between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima are similar to Nozomi, with some services completing the journey in around 1 hour 20 minutes.

Mizuho services are less frequent than Nozomi, so most travelers simply choose whichever fast train best matches their preferred departure time.

Sakura: Best for Nationwide Japan Rail Pass Holders

Sakura makes a few more stops but is still very fast. Typical Shin-Osaka-to-Hiroshima journeys take around 1 hour 25–35 minutes.

The major advantage is that Sakura can be used under the normal conditions of the nationwide Japan Rail Pass without purchasing the additional Nozomi/Mizuho ticket.

Getting to Shin-Osaka Station

Shinkansen trains to Hiroshima depart from Shin-Osaka Station, not Osaka Station.

Your best route depends on where you are staying in Osaka.

Osaka to Hiroshima Shinkansen Ticket Prices

A regular one-way adult ticket from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima generally costs around ¥10,000–¥11,500, depending on the train and seat type.

Fares can vary depending on the train, season, seat type and booking product, so always check the final amount when purchasing.

How to Buy Tickets

You can buy Shinkansen tickets through:

• SmartEX: The official online booking service for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen.
• JR ticket machines: Available at Shin-Osaka and other major JR stations.

Can You Use a Rail Pass from Osaka to Hiroshima?

Nationwide Japan Rail Pass

Yes. The nationwide Japan Rail Pass covers Sakura, Hikari and Kodama services between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima under the normal pass conditions.

Nozomi and Mizuho require a separate [ONLY WITH JAPAN RAIL PASS] NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket.

For Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima, the current adult supplement is ¥4,170 one way.

Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass

The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass is particularly well suited to this journey because it includes reserved-seat travel on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima.

Unlike the nationwide JR Pass, the regional pass can be used on covered Nozomi and Mizuho services within the Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima section.

The pass currently costs ¥17,000 for five consecutive days, so a round trip between Osaka and Hiroshima can already make it worth comparing with individual tickets.

Should You Reserve a Seat from Osaka to Hiroshima?

A seat reservation is not always essential, but I generally recommend reserving one for the Shin-Osaka-to-Hiroshima journey.

The trip is relatively short, but the Sanyo Shinkansen can be busy, particularly on weekends, during Japanese holiday periods and at popular departure times.

A reservation is especially useful if you:

• Are traveling as a couple, family or group and want to sit together
• Have oversized luggage
• Are traveling during a busy holiday period
• Have a fixed sightseeing schedule in Hiroshima

If you are using the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, Ordinary Car reserved seats on covered Shinkansen services are included, so there is usually little reason not to reserve when your plans are fixed.

Traveling from Osaka to Hiroshima With Large Luggage

The Sanyo Shinkansen has special rules for oversized baggage.

If the combined total of your suitcase’s length + width + height is 160 cm or less, you normally do not need a special baggage reservation.

If the total dimensions are more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm, you must reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area or an eligible oversized baggage compartment.

There is no additional charge when you correctly reserve an eligible oversized-baggage space with your reserved seat.

If you bring oversized baggage onboard without the required reservation, you may be charged a ¥1,000 baggage fee and railway staff may direct you to another storage area.

Arriving at Hiroshima Station

The Sanyo Shinkansen arrives at Hiroshima Station, which is the main rail gateway for sightseeing in Hiroshima and onward travel to Miyajima.

The Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome are not directly beside Hiroshima Station, so you will need to continue by streetcar, bus or other local transportation.

Hiroshima Station to the Atomic Bomb Dome

One of the simplest options is Hiroshima’s streetcar system. Current Hiroshima Electric Railway services on Routes 2 and 6 connect Hiroshima Station with Genbaku Dome-mae (Atomic Bomb Dome).

From the Atomic Bomb Dome stop, you are immediately beside the dome and at the northern edge of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

Hiroshima Station to Peace Memorial Park

You can also use local buses or Hiroshima’s sightseeing loop bus. The official Hiroshima tourism guide lists the sightseeing loop bus journey from Hiroshima Station to the Peace Memorial Park area at about 16 minutes.

Another option is to use the streetcar and get off near the park, then continue on foot.

Continuing From Hiroshima to Miyajima

Miyajima is one of the easiest and most popular side trips from Hiroshima, and you can continue there directly using JR trains and the ferry.

1. From Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Main Line toward Iwakuni.
2. Get off at Miyajimaguchi Station. The train journey takes about 30 minutes.
3. Walk about five minutes from the station to the Miyajimaguchi ferry terminal.
4. Take a ferry across to Miyajima. The crossing takes about 10 minutes.

The JR West Miyajima Ferry is particularly useful for travelers using the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass because both the JR train to Miyajimaguchi and the JR West ferry are covered under the pass conditions.

A typical Osaka-to-Hiroshima journey is straightforward.

1. Travel from your Osaka hotel area to Shin-Osaka Station.
2. Follow the signs for the Sanyo Shinkansen platforms.
3. Board a Nozomi, Mizuho or Sakura service bound toward Hiroshima, Hakata or farther west.
4. Ride directly to Hiroshima Station without changing trains.
5. From Hiroshima Station, continue by streetcar or bus to Peace Memorial Park, or transfer to a JR train if you are heading directly to Miyajima.

On a fast Nozomi or Mizuho service, the Shinkansen journey from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. Sakura usually takes only a little longer.

Can You Visit Hiroshima as a Day Trip From Osaka?

Yes. Hiroshima is very feasible as a day trip from Osaka because the fastest Shinkansen services take only around 1 hour 20 minutes each way between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima.

If you leave Osaka early, you can comfortably visit major Hiroshima sights such as the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum before returning in the evening.

What About Hiroshima and Miyajima in One Day?

It is possible to combine Hiroshima and Miyajima on a day trip from Osaka, but the day becomes considerably busier.

After arriving in Hiroshima, reaching Miyajima takes roughly another 45 minutes using the JR train and ferry route. You then need enough time for sightseeing on the island, the return trip to Hiroshima and the Shinkansen back to Osaka.

If both Hiroshima and Miyajima are important to you, staying one or two nights in Hiroshima gives you a much more relaxed experience.
