Must-See Sights in Nara

1. Todai-ji Temple & the Great Buddha

No visit to Nara is complete without seeing the colossal Great Buddha (Daibutsu) housed in the Todai-ji Temple. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Japan’s most famous and historically significant temples, originally built in the 8th century. The Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) remains one of the largest wooden buildings in the world.

2. Kasuga Taisha Shrine

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Japan’s most famous and historically significant temples, originally built in the 8th century. The Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) remains one of the largest wooden buildings in the world.

3. Naramachi District

Step into the Edo period in Naramachi, Nara’s former merchant district. You’ll find beautifully preserved machiya (townhouses), local craft shops, tea houses, and quaint museums. It’s a great place to slow down, sip matcha, and pick up unique souvenirs.

4. Isuien Garden

This peaceful garden near Todai-ji offers a lovely escape from the crowds. Designed with classic Japanese landscaping principles, Isuien features koi ponds, tea houses, and borrowed scenery from nearby hills and temples.

Meet the Sacred Deer of Nara Park

One of Nara’s most iconic and delightful experiences is meeting the free-roaming deer of Nara Park. Considered messengers of the gods in Shinto belief, these deer are protected as a national treasure and have been living in harmony with people for centuries.

They wander freely around the park and nearby temple areas, often bowing to visitors—yes, bowing! You can buy special deer crackers (shika senbei) from local vendors and feed them, but be respectful. While most deer are gentle, they can get assertive if they think you're holding snacks!

🦌 Deer Etiquette Tips:

  • Hold the crackers flat when offering them.

  • Don’t tease or chase the deer.

  • Be mindful of children around bolder deer.

The best season to visit Nara

The weather in Nara during the summer is quite hot and humid and the sightseeing will involve a lot of walking, so I personally recommend Spring or Fall.

  1. Spring (March to May) - This is a great time to see the famous cherry blossom trees in Nara. Nara Park and many of the temples and shrines are surrounded by cherry blossom trees, making it a stunning sight to behold. However, it can be quite crowded during this time, especially during peak bloom.

  2. Fall (September to November) - This is a great time to see the autumn foliage in Nara. The trees in Nara Park and at various temples and gardens turn shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a picturesque scene. The weather during this time is also mild and comfortable.
