Day 5 is a particularly long travel day. Travelers who have more time should consider breaking up the route or extending the itinerary to seven or eight days.

JR Hokkaido currently calculates that a regular Sapporo–Hakodate round trip plus a Sapporo–Otaru round trip costs about ¥23,140.
The 5-Day Hokkaido Rail Pass currently costs ¥22,000 when purchased in advance or ¥23,000 when purchased at a station.
This itinerary also includes travel to Asahikawa and the Furano/Biei area, making the pass particularly worth comparing with individual tickets for this route.
Important: This Is a Fast-Paced Hokkaido Itinerary
Hokkaido is much larger than it looks on a map. The Asahikawa to Hakodate journey on Day 5 is especially long and involves substantial time on trains.
If you have seven or eight days, adding an extra night between central Hokkaido and Hakodate will make the trip considerably more relaxed.

Pass Day 1
Otaru is an easy rail trip from Sapporo and makes a relaxed first day using the Hokkaido Rail Pass. Return to Sapporo in the afternoon or evening.
If you prefer a slower morning, Otaru works well as a half-day trip, but allowing most of the day gives you more time to explore beyond the canal.

Day 3: Sapporo to Asahikawa

Use Asahikawa as your base for a day exploring Furano and Biei, two of central Hokkaido’s best-known scenic areas.

Season Matters Here
Train and sightseeing-bus options around Furano and Biei vary by season. Summer offers the widest range of tourist services, while winter requires more careful planning around weather and transportation.
Seasonal trains can also add something special to a Hokkaido itinerary. For example, the Furano Lavender Express currently operates between Sapporo and Furano on selected dates from June through September.
Rail alone does not reach every major sightseeing spot, so you may need to combine JR trains with local buses or sightseeing buses depending on what you want to visit.
After exploring Furano and Biei, return through Asahikawa and continue to Sapporo in the evening. This makes the following day’s journey to Hakodate much easier.

Day 5: Sapporo to Hakodate
Leave Sapporo in the morning and travel south to Hakodate by Limited Express Hokuto. The journey takes you through southern Hokkaido with views of coastline, mountains and countryside along the way.
