What Is the Furano Lavender Express Like On Board?
The 2026 Furano Lavender Express normally uses JR Hokkaido’s KiHa 261-5000 series “Lavender” trainset, a modern five-car limited express designed for both regular intercity travel and seasonal sightseeing services.
Lavender Lounge in Car 1
One of the train’s most distinctive features is the Lavender Lounge in Car 1. This is a shared free space rather than a separately bookable premium seat area, so passengers are asked to use it considerately and share the space with others.
In 2026, JR Hokkaido is also providing an original boarding certificate in the Lavender Lounge, with a commemorative stamp available on board.
All Seats Are Reserved
The Furano Lavender Express is all-reserved in 2026, so every passenger needs an assigned seat before boarding. This applies even if your fare is covered by a JR rail pass.
The train is comfortable for the roughly two-hour trip from Sapporo, with reclining limited-express seating, large windows, luggage space, and onboard facilities suitable for a longer-distance journey.

Because all seats on the Furano Lavender Express are reserved, I strongly recommend booking both your outbound and return journeys as soon as your plans are fixed — especially during peak lavender season in July.
Option 1: Reserve Online
JR Hokkaido rail passes, including the Sapporo–Furano Area Pass and Hokkaido Rail Pass, can be purchased through the JR-EAST Train Reservation website, where eligible reserved seats can also be booked online.
For regular tickets, reservations generally open at 10:00 Japan time one month before the travel date.
Option 2: Reserve at a JR Station
After receiving your rail pass, you can obtain a reserved-seat ticket at a JR Ticket Counter, JR Information Desk, or a compatible reserved-seat ticket vending machine at major JR Hokkaido stations.
If you already hold a valid Sapporo–Furano Area Pass or Hokkaido Rail Pass, there is normally no additional charge for an ordinary-car reserved seat within the pass coverage area.
Book the Return Train Too
The Furano Lavender Express has a very limited schedule. If you are visiting Furano as a day trip from Sapporo, reserve the 16:53 Furano → Sapporo service at the same time as your morning train rather than assuming you can find a seat later in the day.
Can You Visit Farm Tomita on a Day Trip from Sapporo?
Yes. With the 2026 Furano Lavender Express timetable, a Sapporo day trip gives you a little over seven hours between arriving in Furano at 9:44 and departing at 16:53. That is enough time to visit Farm Tomita and enjoy part of the Furano area, provided you plan your local transport in advance.
Getting from Furano Station to Farm Tomita
Farm Tomita is actually in Nakafurano, north of central Furano. You have several options from Furano Station:
- JR Furano Line: Travel toward Nakafurano and continue on foot or use local transport.
- Furano Bus: The bus from Furano Station to Nakafurano takes about 12 minutes; Farm Tomita is then approximately a 25-minute walk or a short taxi ride away.
- Taxi: The simplest option if you want to maximize sightseeing time.
- Furano-Biei Norokko Train: On operating days, this seasonal train stops at Lavender Farm Station, only about a 7–8 minute walk from Farm Tomita.

Important: Do not build your itinerary around Lavender Farm Station unless the Furano-Biei Norokko is operating on your date. It is a seasonal temporary station served by the Norokko train rather than a regular year-round station.
When Is the Best Time to Ride the Furano Lavender Express?
The train operates across much of the summer sightseeing season, but if your main goal is to see Furano’s famous lavender fields, early to mid-July is usually the best time to visit.
Typical Lavender Season at Farm Tomita
- Late June: Early lavender begins blooming.
- Early to mid-July: Usually the strongest overall period for the classic purple lavender fields.
- Mid to late July: Some fields remain excellent, while harvesting begins in others.
- Late July to early August: Later-blooming varieties can still be seen, but the main lavender peak is generally passing.
Farm Tomita lists the best viewing period for its Traditional Lavender Field and Lavender Forest Field as early to mid-July, while some later-blooming varieties continue into late July and early August.
My recommendation: If lavender is the main reason for your trip, aim for roughly the first half of July. If your dates are outside that window, Furano can still be beautiful, but you should not expect every lavender field to be at peak colour.
Peak bloom also means peak crowds. Trains, buses, taxis, and popular attractions can all be much busier in July, so advance seat reservations become especially important.
Practical Tips Before Riding the Furano Lavender Express
1. Don’t Rely on an IC Card for the Whole Journey
IC cards such as Kitaca and Suica cannot be used on the Takikawa–Furano section. If you are travelling with regular tickets rather than a rail pass, purchase the appropriate paper ticket and limited express ticket before boarding.
2. Reserve Early in Peak Lavender Season
Every seat is reserved in 2026, and July is the busiest period for Furano sightseeing. If your travel date is fixed, booking both directions in advance is much safer than waiting until the day of travel.
3. Large Luggage Is Manageable
The Lavender trainset includes large-luggage storage areas and luggage racks. Space is available on a first-come basis, so travellers with very large suitcases should board promptly and avoid bringing more luggage than necessary for a Furano day trip.
4. A Multipurpose Room Is Available
The train also has a multipurpose room that can be used when a passenger feels unwell or for purposes such as nursing a baby. It cannot be reserved in advance; speak with the conductor if you need to use it.
5. Leave a Time Buffer Before the Return Train
If you are visiting Farm Tomita or other attractions outside central Furano, aim to be back at Furano Station well before the 16:53 departure. Missing the seasonal direct train can make the return to Sapporo considerably less convenient.
One particularly important 2026 note: the Furano-Biei Norokko Train is scheduled to operate for the final time on September 23, 2026. If you want to combine the Lavender Express with the Norokko and Lavender Farm Station, 2026 is the last opportunity to do so under the current service.
Is the Furano Lavender Express Worth It?
If you are staying in Sapporo and want to visit Furano without renting a car, the Furano Lavender Express is one of the most convenient options. The direct journey avoids a transfer at Takikawa and gives you enough time for a full day of sightseeing before returning to Sapporo in the evening.
It Is Especially Worth Considering If You:
- Want to visit Furano as a day trip from Sapporo.
- Prefer travelling by train rather than renting a car.
- Are visiting during the summer flower and lavender season.

- Already have a rail pass that covers the route.
My view: The biggest advantage is not that the train itself is a major sightseeing attraction. It is the convenience of travelling directly from central Sapporo to Furano in about two hours, without changing trains. During lavender season, that can make a day trip considerably easier.
If you have several days available, however, I would consider staying overnight in Furano or Biei. The region has much more to see than can comfortably fit into a single day, and an overnight stay gives you greater flexibility with local trains, buses, weather, and flower-viewing conditions.
