JR Kyushu Rail Pass Guide: Prices, Coverage & Is It Worth It?

The JR Kyushu Rail Pass is designed for international visitors traveling around Kyushu by train. Depending on your itinerary, you can choose a pass covering all of Kyushu or a smaller pass focused on northern or southern Kyushu.

The passes cover many JR Kyushu local trains, limited express trains and Shinkansen services, making them worth comparing if your trip includes several long-distance rail journeys.

Is the JR Kyushu Rail Pass Worth It?

It can be excellent value if you are traveling between several Kyushu cities within a short period. If you are staying mainly in Fukuoka or taking only one or two longer train journeys, individual tickets may cost less.

What Does the JR Kyushu Rail Pass Cover?

JR Kyushu Rail Passes cover eligible JR Kyushu trains within the valid area of the specific pass you purchase. Coverage differs between the All Kyushu, Northern Kyushu and Southern Kyushu passes.

Generally Included

  • Eligible JR Kyushu local and rapid trains
  • Eligible JR Kyushu limited express trains
  • Kyushu Shinkansen within the valid area of your pass
  • Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen (KAMOME) within the valid area of your pass
  • Ordinary-class reserved seating on eligible trains
  • Ordinary-class non-reserved seating where available

Not Included

  • Sanyo Shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura
  • Fukuoka City Subway and other municipal subway systems
  • Most local bus services
  • Railways operated by non-JR companies outside the pass conditions
  • Green Car accommodation unless the required additional charges are paid

Important: Hakata to Kokura Shinkansen Is Not Covered

Although both Hakata and Kokura are in Kyushu, the Shinkansen section between them belongs to the Sanyo Shinkansen and is operated by JR West.

JR Kyushu Rail Passes therefore do not cover this Shinkansen section. Pass holders traveling between Fukuoka and Kokura should use an eligible JR Kyushu conventional train, such as a limited express, or purchase a separate Shinkansen ticket.

Coverage Depends on the Pass You Choose

The All Kyushu Rail Pass has the broadest coverage, while the Northern and Southern Kyushu passes are limited to their respective regions.

Always confirm that your complete route falls inside the valid area of the pass before purchasing.

Who Can Buy the JR Kyushu Rail Pass?

The JR Kyushu Rail Pass is available to eligible international visitors traveling in Japan for sightseeing under Temporary Visitor status.

Eligibility at a Glance

  • You must hold a passport issued by a country other than Japan.
  • You must reside outside Japan.
  • You must be visiting Japan under Temporary Visitor status.
  • Carry your passport with you when using the pass.

Check Your Entry Status

Eligibility rules matter even if you hold a foreign passport. Confirm that your entry status meets the current JR Kyushu requirements before purchasing the pass.

Which JR Kyushu Rail Pass Should You Choose?

You do not necessarily need the All Kyushu pass. If your itinerary stays mostly in northern or southern Kyushu, one of the smaller passes may offer better value.

Pass Best for Typical destinations
Northern Kyushu Trips focused on northern and central Kyushu Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Saga, Beppu/Oita and Kumamoto
Southern Kyushu Trips focused on southern and southeastern Kyushu Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Miyazaki and southern Oita
All Kyushu Longer itineraries combining both northern and southern Kyushu Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Oita, Miyazaki and more
Individual Tickets Short trips with only one or two major rail journeys Best when you do not travel enough to justify a rail pass

Choose the Smallest Pass That Covers Your Route

If every major journey falls within the Northern Kyushu coverage area, there is little reason to pay extra for the All Kyushu Pass. Build your itinerary first, then choose the pass.

Seat Reservations with the JR Kyushu Rail Pass

Reserved ordinary-class seats are available on eligible trains, but the number of included reservations depends on which JR Kyushu Rail Pass you hold.

Pass Included Seat Reservations
All Kyushu Rail Pass Unlimited on eligible trains
Northern Kyushu Rail Pass Up to 6 reservations
Southern Kyushu Rail Pass Up to 6 reservations

How to Reserve Seats

  • Reserve seats after receiving the pass at an eligible JR Kyushu station.
  • Use a participating reserved-seat ticket machine where available.
  • Some popular trains can also be booked in advance through JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking for an additional reservation fee.

Reserve Popular Sightseeing Trains Early

Trains such as Yufuin no Mori and other popular sightseeing services can sell out. If one of these trains is an important part of your itinerary, reserve as early as your booking method allows.

Example Kyushu Itineraries and Which Pass Fits

The best JR Kyushu Rail Pass depends on where you travel, not simply how many days you spend in Kyushu. These examples show which pass is worth comparing for several common routes.

Fukuoka → Nagasaki → Kumamoto

Pass to compare: Northern Kyushu Rail Pass

This route stays within northern and central Kyushu, so the Northern Kyushu Pass is usually more relevant than paying extra for an All Kyushu Pass.

Fukuoka → Beppu → Kumamoto

Pass to compare: Northern Kyushu Rail Pass

This is another itinerary where the smaller Northern Kyushu Pass may provide enough coverage for the major JR journeys.

Kumamoto → Kagoshima → Miyazaki

Pass to compare: Southern Kyushu Rail Pass

Travelers focusing on southern Kyushu should compare the Southern Kyushu Pass before purchasing the broader All Kyushu option.

Fukuoka → Nagasaki → Kumamoto → Kagoshima

Pass to compare: All Kyushu Rail Pass

Once your itinerary combines northern and southern Kyushu, the All Kyushu Pass becomes the most relevant regional pass to compare.
