Final Tips for This Takayama-Hokuriku Itinerary
- Reserve buses to and from Shirakawa-go as early as practical when your chosen service requires reservations.
- Remember that the pass is valid for five consecutive days, so plan the start date carefully.
- Do not rely on older guides showing a direct Thunderbird train between Kanazawa and Kyoto. The current route requires a transfer at Tsuruga.
- Pack light or use luggage forwarding because this itinerary involves frequent changes of accommodation.
- Use an IC card or separate tickets for local transportation that falls outside the pass coverage.
- Do not use the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka expecting it to be included in this pass.
Have More Than 5 Days?
Add an extra night in Takayama, Kanazawa or Kyoto rather than trying to add another major destination. Six or seven days makes this route noticeably more relaxed.
With extra time, you could also add one of the scenic rail experiences around Chubu and Hokuriku rather than simply adding another city.
