Hokuriku Arch Pass
Validity: 7 consecutive days
Adult price: ¥35,000
Best for travelers going between Tokyo and Kansai via the Hokuriku region rather than taking the direct Tokaido Shinkansen route.
It can work particularly well for routes involving Tokyo, Nagano, Toyama, Kanazawa, Fukui, Kyoto and Osaka.
Takayama–Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass
Validity: 5 consecutive days
Adult price: ¥19,800
Designed for travel through Central Japan, including routes linking Nagoya or Osaka with Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa and Toyama.
Kansai Area Pass
Available for shorter trips around Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe and parts of the surrounding Kansai region.
This can be useful for travelers staying within Kansai, although local IC cards and individual tickets should also be compared for simple itineraries.
Kansai WIDE Area Pass

Watch the Hakata–Kokura Exception
JR Kyushu Rail Passes do not cover the Sanyo Shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura because that section is operated by JR West, even though both stations are on Kyushu.

The nationwide JR Pass is designed for trips covering several regions, while regional passes focus on a smaller area. Neither option is automatically better—the right choice depends on your itinerary.
